ChatGPT video editing.
ChatGPT plans the edit; an app connected over MCP makes it. How to add one, and what to expect.
ChatGPT does not edit your footage by itself. To edit video from ChatGPT, add a video editor as a custom MCP app (OpenAI's docs call these apps or plugins and have renamed them more than once). Vidmoat's MCP server lets ChatGPT create a project, cut, caption and render, with a smaller tool set than Claude or Cursor get.[1][2]
Vidmoat is not made by OpenAI. Below: the setup, what changes in ChatGPT, and the alternatives.[1]

View sourcesWhat it can and cannot do on its own
OpenAI documents adding a custom MCP server to ChatGPT by its HTTPS address and choosing how it signs in; you then call it with @ in a conversation. Which ChatGPT plans may add one, and whether the app may make changes rather than only read, is set by OpenAI and has changed during 2026, so check OpenAI's help page for your plan.[1][2]
Vidmoat runs its own MCP server with 117 first-party tools: create a project, import footage, cut, caption, grade, render a preview frame and render the finished video. ChatGPT is offered a reviewed subset of those tools: some, like buying credits and browser automation, are left out for ChatGPT.[1]
Connect ChatGPT to Vidmoat
- Follow OpenAI's steps to add a custom MCP server, with the address https://api.vidmoat.com/api/mcp. Choose OAuth sign-in.[1]
- Sign in to Vidmoat in the window that opens and approve the connection.
- In a conversation, mention the Vidmoat app with @ and ask for the edit.[1]
The options
A hosted multi-track editor with an MCP server. ChatGPT gets the reviewed tool set: projects, editing, captions, previews and renders.[1]
Best for: Finishing a real edit from a ChatGPT conversation and opening it in an editor afterwards.[1]

| FEATURE | VIDMOAT | DESCRIPT | OPUSCLIP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reachable from ChatGPT | Yes, as a custom MCP app | Yes, in the app directory[3] | Yes[5] |
| Full multi-track timeline | Yes, multi-track: video, audio, text and effects layers | Yes, plus transcript editing[4] | Text and timeline editing on paid plans[7] |
| Returns a rendered video | Yes | Share link, not an MP4[3] | Not checked[5] |
Where the others are genuinely better
- Descript is already in ChatGPT's app directory, which is fewer steps than adding a custom server.[3]
- OpusClip is the more direct choice if the whole job is clipping a long video into many shorts.[6]
Who should pick which
You want a finished, rendered edit of your own footage and a timeline to open afterwards.
You want the quickest install from ChatGPT and your content is spoken word.[3]
How to do it in Vidmoat
- Create a free Vidmoat account and upload your footage, or let ChatGPT import it for you.
- Add Vidmoat to ChatGPT as a remote MCP server using https://api.vidmoat.com/api/mcp, then sign in to Vidmoat and approve the connection.
- Ask for the edit in plain words, for example: "cut the dead air, add bold captions and make a 9:16 version".
- Ask it to render a preview frame and check its own work before it renders the whole video.
- Open the project in the Vidmoat editor whenever you want to take over by hand, then export.
Pricing
Vidmoat Hobby is free: 3 projects, 720p exports with a small watermark and 40 AI credits a month. What Vidmoat does not do
- ChatGPT sees fewer Vidmoat tools than Claude or Cursor; new tools reach ChatGPT only after OpenAI reviews them.
- Talking photos and lip sync are not generally available to Vidmoat accounts today.
Frequently asked
Can ChatGPT edit videos?
Not by itself. With a video editor connected as an MCP app, ChatGPT can make edits by calling that editor's tools.[1]
Is there a ChatGPT video editor plugin?
Video editors publish MCP apps that ChatGPT can use; OpenAI calls them apps or plugins. Vidmoat's can be added by its address, and Descript lists one in the ChatGPT directory.[1][3]
Which ChatGPT plan do I need?
OpenAI decides which plans can add custom MCP apps and whether they may make changes; it has changed in 2026, so check OpenAI's help page. On the Vidmoat side, every plan can connect.[2]
Is this an official Anthropic, OpenAI or Cursor product?
No. Vidmoat is a separate company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic, OpenAI or the makers of Cursor. Those assistants support the open Model Context Protocol, and Vidmoat publishes an MCP server they can connect to.[8][9][1][10]
