WORKFLOW GUIDE

AI video editing agents compared.

Most video tools now have an agent. The useful question is what it edits, whether you can still change the result, and whether your own assistant can reach it.

SHORT ANSWER

An AI video editing agent takes a plain-language request and performs the edit itself. Vidmoat, Descript (Underlord) and invideo each ship one and publish an MCP server; OpusClip and Submagic publish MCP servers for clipping and captions. Vidmoat's agent works on a full multi-track timeline and quotes the credit cost before each run.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Pick by material: transcript-led, generation-led, clip-led or footage-led. The table below says which is which.

Published by Vidmoat. Descript, invideo, OpusClip, Submagic are named here only to compare them; Vidmoat is not affiliated with or endorsed by them. Each claim about another product links to the page it came from, with the date we read it.

The options

Vidmoat

An agent on a real multi-track timeline (cuts, captions, reframes, grades, music), with a quote before every run and 117 MCP tools for outside assistants.

Best for: Footage-first social and marketing video where you still want to touch the timeline.

Descript

Underlord, which Descript calls its all-purpose video agent, inside a transcript-first editor, with an official MCP.[1][2]

Best for: Podcasts, interviews and narration.[1]

invideo

AI agents that build videos largely from generation and stock, a multitrack timeline on paid plans, and an MCP server.[3][7][4]

Best for: Videos made mostly from AI generation and stock.[3]

OpusClip

ClipAnything finds moments in long videos using visual, audio and sentiment cues; an MCP server drives it.[8][5]

Best for: Bulk short clips from long videos.[8]

Submagic

Captions and short-form polish from one click, with an API and an MCP server; no traditional timeline.[9][6]

Best for: Caption-styled shorts at volume.[9]

Where the others are genuinely better

  • Descript's agent is the stronger fit for spoken-word material, because its editor is the transcript.[1]
  • invideo reaches more generation models, including Seedance, Veo, Sora and Kling, than Vidmoat offers.[3]
  • OpusClip scores clips for virality on Starter and above, which Vidmoat does not do.[10]

Who should pick which

Vidmoat

You film your own footage and want the agent to cut it on a timeline you can still edit, or drive it from Claude or Cursor.[13][14]

Descript

You edit by transcript.[1]

invideo

You generate more than you film.[3]

OpusClip or Submagic

The job is many captioned shorts from long videos.[8][9]

How to do it in Vidmoat

  1. Create a free Vidmoat account and open the editor.
  2. Upload your footage (or start from a template or a storyboard).
  3. Type the edit into the AI console, for example: "remove the silences, add karaoke captions, reframe to 9:16".
  4. Read the credit quote and start the run. Every change lands on the timeline as an ordinary, undoable edit.
  5. Adjust anything by hand, then export.

Pricing

Vidmoat Hobby is free: 3 projects, 720p exports with a small watermark and 40 AI credits a month. Creator is $19 a month, or $15 a month billed yearly, with 2160p (4K) exports, no watermark and 1,500 AI credits a month. Studio is $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly, with 6,000 AI credits a month, AI video generation and personal API keys.

What Vidmoat does not do

  • Vidmoat has no virality score and is not a one-click clip farm.
  • Talking photos and lip sync are not generally available to Vidmoat accounts today.
  • Fetching a video from a social link is not switched on today.
  • Upscaling is not a general feature yet: it is limited to paid plans in the app.

Frequently asked

What is an AI video editing agent?

Software that takes a plain-language request, plans the steps and performs the edit itself, rather than offering separate one-click tools. The useful ones leave you an editable project.

Which AI video editors have an MCP server?

Vidmoat, Descript, invideo, OpusClip and Submagic all publish one, per their own pages. They differ in what they edit: a full timeline, a transcript, generation, or clips.[2][4][5][6]

What does a Vidmoat agent run cost?

5 credits for the first step of an agent run and 3 for each step after it. The quote shows the most it can spend before it starts, and generated media is priced separately first.

Can the agent see the video?

Vidmoat's agent reads the transcript and frames drawn by the export renderer, so it can check caption placement and layout before rendering.
