They create a core matte to solidify the center of the subject, an edge matte to preserve delicate details like hair, and separate garbage mattes to manually exclude light stands or boom mics from the frame. The nightmare truly begins with despilling—the process of removing the green or blue light reflecting off the screen onto the subject's skin and clothing. Despill algorithms often leave behind ugly magenta or gray artifacts, forcing the artist to manually restore the original luminance and color variations using complex hue-shifting curves. Finally, to seat the subject in the new background, the artist must manually construct light wrap setups using blurred background layers multiplied over the subject's edges, carefully matching the focal depth and adding synthetic film grain to glue the disparate elements together. It is an arduous process of mathematical tweaking that can take hours for a single shot.
