Audio ducking is the unsung hero of professional mixing. It is the process of automatically lowering the volume of background music or sound effects whenever dialogue is spoken. Psychologically, the human ear cannot easily separate competing frequencies; if the music and the voice occupy the same mid-range frequencies at the same volume, the dialogue becomes muddy and unintelligible, leading to immediate viewer frustration.

By dynamically scooping out the music's volume precisely when someone speaks, the editor creates an 'acoustic pocket' for the dialogue to sit in. This ensures absolute clarity without sacrificing the emotional energy of the background track. When the speaker pauses, the music swells back up to fill the void, maintaining the pacing and emotional momentum of the scene. It breathes life into the mix.

In legacy software, manual ducking requires drawing volume automation curves. The editor expands the music track and uses the Pen tool to place four keyframes around every single line of dialogue: one to start the fade down, one to hit the floor volume, one to start the fade up, and one to return to normal volume.
