Color grading is not merely color correction (fixing white balance and exposure); it is the deliberate manipulation of color to evoke specific emotional responses. Color psychology dictates that cool tones (blues, teals) evoke isolation, clinical precision, or night, while warm tones (oranges, yellows) evoke nostalgia, heat, or intimacy. The 'teal and orange' Hollywood look is pervasive because it relies on complementary colors to force the subject's skin tones to pop against a cool background.

However, a static grade applied to an entire video ignores the emotional ebb and flow of the narrative. True cinematic grading is dynamic. As the story moves from a tense, dramatic moment into a triumphant climax, the color palette should subtly shift to reflect that emotional journey. This subconscious visual signaling is what separates amateur vlogs from premium narrative filmmaking.

The manual way (and why it hurts)

In DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro, dynamic color grading requires a deep understanding of color wheels, curves, and vectorscopes. To change a grade over time, the colorist must apply keyframes to the Lumetri Color effect or use keyframed nodes.
