Exporting

My export failed

What each failure message means, what "stalled" is, and what you should do about each.

An export runs on our servers, not in your browser, so you can close the tab while it works. The progress bar and the automatic "open when done" only work while the tab is open. The finished file is waiting for you in the Exports tab of the dashboard either way.

It refused before it even started

These checks run in the browser and name the clip, because each one would otherwise export black or silent:

  • A clip added from the desktop app that only exists on that device. Open the project in the desktop app to export it, or upload that file.
  • A clip that is still uploading. The badge on the clip clears when it lands. Try again in a few seconds.
  • A clip whose upload failed. Click the red ⚠ RETRY UPLOAD badge on the clip, wait, then export again.
  • A clip pointing at a file that no longer exists. Replace or delete that clip.

You may also see a non-blocking list headed Before you export, one thing to check, which flags things like a gap of black at the start or every audio clip being muted. You can Go back and fix or Export anyway.

Export has stalled on our side

This appears when the job stops moving for 90 seconds. Nothing is wrong with your project. Try again. If it happens twice, use the Tell us link on the message, which carries the job reference so we can look up exactly what happened without asking you for anything.

The render worker restarted

A message saying the worker restarted or hung means the machine doing the encoding went away mid-job. Start the export again. Jobs stuck in progress for more than 20 minutes are marked failed automatically, so a job that never returns will eventually say so rather than spinning forever.

Monthly export limit reached

Monthly export limit reached (8). Upgrade for unlimited exports. The free plan gets 8 exports in a rolling 30 day window. Creator and above are unlimited. Note that the count goes up when a render is queued, so a failed one still uses one.

Too many at once

You have reached the maximum number of concurrent renders. Hobby runs 1 at a time, Creator 3, Studio 5. Wait for one to finish.

Too many exports queued

A rate limit, not a quota. Wait a moment and try again.

If the file plays but looks or sounds wrong

That is a different problem from a failed export. Resolution and the watermark are covered in the export quality article, and silent audio usually traces back to a muted clip, which the pre-export check will tell you about.

Did that not cover it?

Send us a ticket and we will answer. If you are signed in it arrives with your plan and any recent errors attached, so you do not have to describe them.
